Mountain Climbing

Mountain climbing also known as mountaineering is a sport, hobby or profession of hiking, skiing and climbing mountains which is largely practiced in Sri Lanka. The sport of climbing mountains is simply one of the finest outdoor opportunities available to the lover of high places especially among the luscious and tropical ranges of mountains found in the hill areas of Sri Lanka. It is all about challenge and perseverance, about putting hands and feet onto rocks and ice and snow and finally reaching a summit.

There is no greater thrill than feeling the crunch beneath your feet as you climb a remote mountain peak. Sri Lanka is best experienced on foot and lovers of mountain climbing will have some of the finest outdoor opportunities during their visit. Some of the famous mountain ranges include the Virgin Hills Mountain Range and the Knuckles Mountain Range.

Mountain climbing is relatively a new activity to Sri Lanka and there are plenty of opportunities to discover new climbing routes. For less serious climbers, there are some exciting routes that are already been developed including the rock face of Sri Lanka’s highest waterfall ‘Bambarakanda’. Other places that are popular among mountain climbers are Knuckles Mountain Range, the Ella Adventure Park, Habarana, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Horton Plains and Buttala.

  • Though not the highest mountain of Sri Lanka, the striking pyramid of Adam's Peak 2243 m (7,359 ft) is certainly most remarkable.
  • Ella is a small sleepy village situated 203 km from Colombo and 13 km from Bandarawela on the leeward side of the central mountains.
  • Haputale is a town 179 km away from Colombo of Badulla District in the Uva Province, Sri Lanka with an elevation of 1431 m (4695 ft) above sea level.
  • Kandy, the last kingdom of Sri Lanka, is situated 115 km off Colombo, and 1600 ft above sea level almost encircled by the Mahaweli Ganga.
  • Kithulgala is a town situated 86 km off Colombo, in the west of Sri Lanka. It is in the wet zone rain forest that receives two monsoons every year, and is one of the wettest places in the country.
  • The world famous Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, belonging to the Districts of Matale and Kandy.
  • Nuwara Eliya is located 168 km off Colombo, Sri Lanka, 77 km off Kandy with an elevation of 6200 ft above sea level in the central mountains.
