Hiking

Now with an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, hiking is gaining ground among tourists, as they take long walks in the countryside, mostly for pleasure or exercise. Since it is an outdoor activity, the bright sunny conditions, especially in the early mornings and during evenings, make walking a pleasure in beautiful natural environments or on pre-charted path ways which are now emerging. As a natural recreational activity and sport, hiking is popular among tourists who are focused on physical fitness. Since it is economical and convenient, hikers can walk as far as they wish to, through hills or mountains.

At a relatively low cost, local hiking equipment stores provide shoes applicable for the hiking terrain, water, compasses, hiking poles, backpacks with survival tool kits, food and medicine for overnight hiking.

Many local hikers in Sri Lanka walk during weekends or holiday vacations. There are hikes arranged by hotels for groups of people who want to go hiking on pre-planned routes through hiking trails that combine exercise with enjoyment  in villages and on densely populated country districts surrounding large towns.
