Golf, a very popular sport in Sri Lanka, is a precision club and ball sport where competing players also known as golfers use different types of clubs to hit balls into a series of holes mapped up on a large open air course by using the least possible number of strokes.
This popularly played game formerly among the colonial rulers and aristocrats was originated in Scotland in the mid-15th Century. The game which was brought to Sri Lanka by the Colonial rulers for their pleasure has become a prominent high profile sport among the elite across the country.
Sri Lanka is home to three of the finest 18 hole championship golf courses comparable to those in Asia. The three golf courses of international standing are located in Colombo, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya: Royal Colombo Golf Club; Victoria Golf and Country Resort; Nuwara Eliya Golf Club. The golf courses in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, both in the Central Highlands, are of great beauty with natural sceneries. The golf courses running through the untouched jungle and bush, the flying golf ball always seen in the background of rich green canopy makes the player relax totally. Since Sri Lanka hasn’t been known in the perspective of a major golf playing destination, the fairways in these golf courses most often remain calm. From Colombo, these two golf courses can be reached by car as well as by helicopters and sea-planes.
