Ella is a small sleepy village situated 203 km from Colombo and 13 km from Bandarawela on the leeward side of the central mountains. The view from the Ella Gap is one of the most spectacular scenic sights with a drop of nearly 1000 m to the plain below. The Ravana Ella Water Falls and the landscape fall away in a dizzy drop of 3000 feet to the eastern plains and the distant sea could be seen on a clear day. The people living here earn their income from tourism and what is significant about Ella is that locals are friendly which helps tourists to enjoy a nice laid back relaxing stay.

The other beautiful thing about Ella is its climate which is hot during the day and very nice and cool at night. Ella is surrounded by hills with spectacular views perfect for walks across tea plantations to temples and waterfalls.

  • Trekking

Ella is a wonderful place to trek through, with its breathtaking views and varying landscape. One day treks as well as 2 to 3 days treks are available, depending on your preference. The trails will take you through dense forests, past rivers and cascading waterfalls and into nearby villages, where you can share their lifestyle and culture during your brief tour. You can also ascend to the Ella Rock and traverse the tea plantations, while drinking in the awe-inspiring views all around.

  • Tea Plantation

Ella is a beautiful small sleepy town on the southern edge of Sri Lanka's hill country. It's situated in the middle of beautiful countryside, with small vegetable plots in the valleys, tea plantations on the hill slopes and forests on the tops. The climate throughout most of the year is typical of the high hill country, with a hot sun by midday, but a moderate air temperature. It will often rain in the afternoon, but only for an hour or so. A sweatshirt, or light jacket is needed at night. In December, it can rain a lot.

  • Train Journey

Kandy to Ella train trip is considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. Passengers need to do prior booking to travel in observation deck, luxury air conditioned compartment, 1st class AC compartment or 2nd-class non-AC reserved seats. The train starts from Colombo Fort Railway station and it takes about 3 hours approximately to reach Kandy/Peradeniya Railway station where the scenic trip begins. The train would reach Ella approximately in six hours and the most scenic part of the train journey is from Hatton to Haputale. It will be a good idea for travelers who go to Adam’s Peak in Maskeliya or white water rafting in Kitulgala to join the train ride from Hatton station. During the journey, the train goes passing lush greenish tea estates, many tunnels, farming fields, villages and various types of forests.
