As its name denotes, this beautiful location is centred around a bay situated on the Indian Ocean in the dry zone of Sri Lanka's southeast coast.

As its name denotes, this beautiful location is centred around a bay situated on the Indian Ocean in the dry zone of Sri Lanka's southeast coast. The bay is located 320 km due east of Colombo. It is a very popular surfing and tourist attraction known locally as "Ullai". Besides surfing, other attractions include lagoon tours, bird watching, elephant watching, Kumana National Park, Kudumpigala monarchy and many ancient ruins and archaeological sites. Since the war on terrorism ended it has become a tourist haven especially for surfers and nature lovers.

The bay hosts a massive fleet of fishing boats which operates off the beach. After the destruction by the Tsunami, many organisations donated boats hence there are far more fishing boats than ever before.

  • Surfing

The surfing season in Arugam Bay starts in April and ends in October. During the season the wind is predominantly offshore with an average water temperature of 28 degrees and an average air temperature of 32 degrees. Surf spots at Arugam Bay are Arugam Point, a long right hand break close to Arugam Bay, which has (on a good day) 2m waves and a 400m ride. Thirty minutes north of Arugam Bay by three-wheeler taxi, Potuvil Point, bit smaller than Arugam Point, breaks off a long stretch of sandy beach. South of Arugam Bay is another surfing point named “Crocodile Rock” which is a fine spot for surfers when there is a sufficient swell.
